Hello from the PTA President!

Welcome Thunderbird families to the 2023-2024 school year! My name is Jamie Reasons, and I am this year's PTA President. A little about me- my family has been at Trailwood since my oldest child started Kindergarten (Mrs. Mellen's class!) in 2012. I have five kids, Taylor and Macy a Junior and Sophomore at Shawnee Mission South, Logan in 6th Grade, and Brandon and Harper in 3rd Grade at Trailwood. We really love our school and Trailwood community! 

I hope you have enjoyed the great, traditional events we've hosted this month including the Popsicle Pop-In and Welcome Back Coffees. I hope you also were able to attend Back-To-School night and feel ready to tackle this school year!  We have a lot of exciting events coming up and many ways for you to be involved. The PTA would love to see you at Donuts with Grownups and the T-Bird Trot this month! Look for information in the newsletter, on our website and on our facebook page for all of our upcoming events. 

Lastly, I'd like to invite you to join us for our first PTA meeting of the year on September 12th, following Donuts with Grownups. You will have a chance to get know other Trailwood families, learn more about the PTA, hear about ways you can be involved and hear from Mr. Lawrence. If you can’t make the meeting but would like to get involved with the PTA, please don’t hesitate to reach out anytime!

Support our PTA by purchasing a membership. We’re managed solely by parent volunteers, and our funding comes from membership dues and fundraising. Becoming a member does not obligate you to attend meetings or volunteer (although, we’d love to have you!). Our PTA provides students, staff and families with a variety of fun and educational opportunities here at Trailwood. Our success depends on your support!

 Trailwood families!  Please help us in throwing a Chiefs Tailgate Lunch for the teachers and staff for the first home football game, Thursday, September 7th!  You can drop your item off at drop off-one of us will be in the drop off line to grab your item (you don’t even have to get out of your car) or make sure your item is there by 11 AM.  

All non-disposable dishes (crock pots) will be washed and put in the office

Trailwood Elementary will be hosting two MVP Trainings in the month of September on 9/6 at 8:15 am and on 9/13 at 7:00 pm. The My Volunteer Pal (MVP) program is the volunteer program for all Shawnee Mission Schools. Who needs MVP training? Only patrons who will be solely/directly responsible for Shawnee Mission School District students (other than their own) need MVP training.

Attending school events and helping with such things as book fairs and carnivals do not require MVP training as the patron would not be solely/directly responsible for students in these capacities.  Volunteer Pals are utilized for a variety of in-school activities including:

• Classroom or school volunteering
• Sharing career interests or special talents with students
• Tutoring
• Chaperones for Shawnee Mission School District approved field trips

Trainings last about an hour. No reservations are needed. Prospective volunteers may train at any location. For more information or to see other training locations and times visit this link: https://www.smsd.org/families/volunteer-mvp   

Calling all Trailwood dads and father figures!

Please consider taking a half-day or full-day out of your busy schedules and spending some time in your child's classroom as a Wingman! This is a great opportunity to interact with the kids and see what they do every day! Your schedule will vary depending on the needs of the day, but you can plan on spending most of your day with your kiddo(s) in the classroom, on the playground or at specials.

Volunteers can choose the dates and times (half-days or full-days) and can float between classrooms (if more than one child is attending Trailwood). Be on the look-out for a SignUp Genius with available dates coming to your inbox next week!

While you do not need to be MVP-certified to participate in the Wingman program, we do highly recommend you complete this training. Trainings generally last one hour and only need to be completed once every five years.
